Lead Statement
Nursing associate professionals provide nursing and personal care for people who are physically or mentally ill, disabled or infirm, in support of implementation of health care, treatment and referrals plans usually established by medical, nursing and other health professionals They usually work under the direction of nursing or other health professionals and perform tasks of more limited range and complexity than nursing professionals.
Task statement
- assessing, planning and providing personal and nursing care, treatment and advice to the sick, injured, disabled, and others in need of care within a defined scope of practice;
- administering medications and other treatments and monitoring responses to treatment;
- cleaning wounds and applying surgical dressings under the guidance of professional nurses or medical doctors;
- monitoring and observing patients’ condition and maintaining a record of observations and treatment;
- assisting in planning and managing the care of individual patients;
- assisting in giving first-aid treatment in emergencies.

The distinction between professional and associate professional nurses should be made on the basis of the nature of the work performed in relation to the tasks specified in this definition. The qualifications held by individuals or that predominate in the country are not the main factor in making this distinction, as training arrangements for nurses vary widely between countries and have varied over time within countries.
