Dit antwoord is gebaseerd op de systematische literatuurstudie van Svendsen SW, Frost P, Vad MV, Andersen JH, getiteld Risk and prognosis of inguinal hernia in relation to occupational mechanical exposures - a systematic review of the epidemiologic evidence, verschenen in Scand J Work Environ Health 2013;39(1):5-26, doi:10.5271/sjweh.3305.

  • One in four men undergoes inguinal hernia repair that carries a risk of recurrence and persistent pain.
  • Occupational mechanical exposures may increase the risk of occurrence and of an unfavourable prognosis.
  • The epidemiologic evidence is too limited to draw conclusions for or against any causal or prognostic associations.
  • There is a need for new knowledge with an emphasis on prevention.
